Lawrence Transformed- Hetal and Samir’s Hindu/Indian Wedding

hindu_wedding_lawrence_feature

You might have already read about a wedding I shot last week if you subscribe to the Lawrence Journal-World: It made the front page last Wednesday. The wedding was a magnet for photogs. In addition to the newspaper coming to the SpringHills Suites, many guests (and even some vendors) had their cameras on hand trying to capture some of the amazing imagery. And who can blame them! From the décor by Event Experts and BitterSweet Floral to the amazing custom sarees and jewelry, the wedding ran the full gamut of colors. Resplendent reds canvassed the bride and groom during the Mandap ceremony. Oneiric oranges of curry blanketed basmati rice at the dinner by Swagat Fine Indian Cuisine and cakes from Slice of Life. Neon colors pulsated on the dance floor at the reception. Eye candy!

Thanks to everyone that helped our photography on the wedding, to Heather for doing the makeup on such short notice and Nichole from Dash for doing the hair. (Speaking of hair, thanks to all the groomsmen for helping the groom shave for the big day too LOL!) A special thanks to Carmen that helped plan and make this such A Beautiful Wedding! It felt like we were in a hotel in Mumbai. Seriously, covering it was a grand, profound experience for us.

Just a few hours left for the free wedding photography contest.

Wow! This has been a close one. The two highest couples have been neck to neck from the moment the both entered. They have recruited friends and friends of friends to help them gain votes for them for their weddings next year. It has been fun watching the enthusiasm and optimism each from each couple. In a little less than two hours the winners will be announced and will soon have an extra relief for their wedding photography. The cool thing is that every couple will have a discount one way or another! I also want to thank all the voters for being part of this wonderful contest and for supporting their friends.

You guys are great!

A Pearl of Great Price – Newborn Photography Olathe KS

Recently, I went to Olathe KS to take pictures of this little pearl. She was wide awake and showing off her beautiful newborn eyes for most of the shoot. And when she did sleep, she took that priceless look even further. What a beauty!

Lindsey & Brett

We shot a classy wedding last month. One Lindsey and Brett exchanged beautiful vows in Gladstone, MO in a grand chapel, filled with friends and loved ones. The ceremony was touching and the reception at Little Theater in Kansas City, MO was a lot of fun. We got a beautiful signature shot of Lindsey and Brett motionless amongst the jubilant dancing at the reception. Here are some of their jaw-dropping beautiful shots to highlight moments of their wedding day.

I think it is hilarious how the guys avoided the garter while Josie {the bride’s maid who caught the bouquet) looked determined to catch it even from before the toss!

Sarah & Richard

Some weddings have themes that aim to represent the couple celebrating their wedding day. Photography is the best way to capture such details of the event whether it be during the wedding celebration or during the wedding reception. I love it when couples agree to celebrate their nuptials with a unique touch and aim to capture them.

Sarah Richard Wedding

Sarah & Richard uniquely celebrated their day expressing their love toward animals–both wild and domesticated. They had Operation Wildlife come and set up some owls and an eagle to bring awareness of this organization that rescues such wild animals.

They also had a slideshow –not of them growing up– rather of their fun furry friends. As their guests stopped to see the pictures of their pets, I could hear some talk about their own beloved pets and their fun habits.

And they decorated their tables with pictures of their cats and dogs.

Indeed Sarah & Richard’s wedding and celebration was unique and enjoyable.

Kelly & Dale

Kelly and Dale’s wedding ceremony was performed at the Danforth Chapel on KU campus. Their reception was celebrated at Maceli’s on New Hampshire Street. Despite the KU/Nebraska game adding traffic and occupying most parking spots, thanks to Kelly and Dale’s careful planning for transportation and the help of great friends everything worked out smoothly. The floral decoration was by Bitter Sweet Floral & Design who added a great touch to the chapel’s adorable look. wedding_597

The Villa of Kansas City

I recently shot a wedding at a charming little venue called the Villa of Kansas City, and I was so impressed that I had to write a few words about it. The first thing that caught my eye about this place was the décor. I would describe it as elegant without coming off as pretentious. The polished hardwood floors reflect the glowfrom the walls and beautiful light fixtures, and everything is draped in matching cream and light tones, making it easier to shoot with natural light, which I prefer. The main hall where the ceremony was held was surprisingly versatile: after the vows, the wedding planner and her crew seamlessly transformed it into a reception hall. The event planner, Candace Hufford, was so accommodating for the bride that I initially mistook her for a bride’s maid. It also surprised me to learn that she, as well as just about every other aspect of the wedding including the catering, was provided in-house by the Villa. With all of the chaos that can ensue amongst the myriad variables in planning a wedding, from the flowers to the flambéd entrées you plan to serve at the reception, it helps to have one go-to person managing everything.

Heavenly Harpist

When you think of heaven, what kind of music comes to mind? There is a reason why the stereotypical portrayal of the afterlife is always accompanied by the soothing sound of a harp: the instrument is, quite simply put, divine! For thousands of years musicians have used harps, albeit in different iterations of the musical instrument, to celebrate the most significant events, and for good reason. With its towering, monolithic presence and unparalleled tone color, no instrument can be so evocative and yet provide as subtle, soothing ambiance as the harp.

And in this day and age, what event is more deserving of beautiful music than the joining of two people to make a family. It is a timeless instrument, fitting for any wedding theme, and usually, any budget. Considering the cost of hiring a wedding singer or quartet, a harpist would be the obvious choice for brides-to-be on a budget.

But with so few harpists with the proficiency and stamina required to perform a wedding, having a harp accompaniment is too often a non-option. Luckily for the Kansas City area, one Erin Wood offers her services for weddings and receptions. With 20+ years of experience, Erin’s musical prowess is unparalleled in the area. For any bride looking for style and elegance in her choice of musical accompaniment, Erin Wood is the perfect choice!

Acting Natural in Front of the Camera.

Has your mind ever gone blank whenever you look at a long test you are about to take (even though you know you know your stuff?) If not- you’re a genius! For the rest of us, the anxiety of test-taking (and life-living) is totally common. I know my mind goes blank when I get in front of the camera (in spite of the countless hours I spent in front of the mirror in my teenage years.) I like my “models” to feel comfortable in front of the camera. So, as a photographer, I need to think how can they have their personalities shine through more naturally.
Fortunately, in photography, both the photographer and the models, we can use “cheat-sheets” to push this anxiety away. I brought sample pictures and showed Maranda and Adam what I am thinking. As I prepared this list, I thought that this was just helping me remember the poses I thought they’d look cute (great) in. But soon I realized that by having this list, they knew exactly what they wanted and came up with other great poses. It helped pictures seem candid. For Maranda and Adam these helped them feel more comfortable in front of the camera (at least it seemed that way!) By the end of the shoot they looked like pro models!
So, what do I do when I am in front of the camera? How do I try to act natural in front of a camera? As I mentioned before, I practiced my smile for hours in front of the mirror as a teenager. I always thought my oldest sister (Leia)’s smile was beautiful so I tried so hard to smile like her. Since I do not have a picture of my sister on hand, I do suggest you look at the look you want to achieve, and practice it for yourself! Yo may want to take a few magazines or pictures that you really like and show them to your photographer to give them ideas!
