Some weddings have themes that aim to represent the couple celebrating their wedding day. Photography is the best way to capture such details of the event whether it be during the wedding celebration or during the wedding reception. I love it when couples agree to celebrate their nuptials with a unique touch and aim to capture them.

Sarah & Richard uniquely celebrated their day expressing their love toward animals–both wild and domesticated. They had Operation Wildlife come and set up some owls and an eagle to bring awareness of this organization that rescues such wild animals.

They also had a slideshow –not of them growing up– rather of their fun furry friends. As their guests stopped to see the pictures of their pets, I could hear some talk about their own beloved pets and their fun habits.

And they decorated their tables with pictures of their cats and dogs.

Indeed Sarah & Richard’s wedding and celebration was unique and enjoyable.

Since we wanted to take more pictures around campus, Kelly Dale and I met after the wedding and took a few pics. Something I really love about taking having sessions on campus is that every now and then we hear students walk by and shouting “Congratulations!” During this newly wed pictures, Kelly, Dale, and I some-what chuckled when someone shouted “congratulations on your engagement!” This location was a great place to have this session and the weather was actually warmer this day than earlier during the wedding. That Kansas weather for you!

Kelly and Dale’s wedding ceremony was performed at the Danforth Chapel on KU campus. Their reception was celebrated at Maceli’s on New Hampshire Street. Despite the KU/Nebraska game adding traffic and occupying most parking spots, thanks to Kelly and Dale’s careful planning for transportation and the help of great friends everything worked out smoothly. The floral decoration was by Bitter Sweet Floral & Design who added a great touch to the chapel’s adorable look.

I recently shot a wedding at a charming little venue called the Villa of Kansas City, and I was so impressed that I had to write a few words about it. The first thing that caught my eye about this place was the décor. I would describe it as elegant without coming off as pretentious. The polished hardwood floors reflect the glowfrom the walls and beautiful light fixtures, and everything is draped in matching cream and light tones, making it easier to shoot with natural light, which I prefer. The main hall where the ceremony was held was surprisingly versatile: after the vows, the wedding planner and her crew seamlessly transformed it into a reception hall. The event planner, Candace Hufford, was so accommodating for the bride that I initially mistook her for a bride’s maid. It also surprised me to learn that she, as well as just about every other aspect of the wedding including the catering, was provided in-house by the Villa. With all of the chaos that can ensue amongst the myriad variables in planning a wedding, from the flowers to the flambéd entrées you plan to serve at the reception, it helps to have one go-to person managing everything.
